Dolphins’ Varsity and JV Teams Impress in Preseason Scrimmage Versus El Camino Real

For the first time since camp opened Palisades High football players got a chance to block, tackle and compete against a team in a different uniform Friday afternoon at Stadium by the Sea.
For the third year in a row, El Camino Real came to town for a 40-play scrimmage—a warm-up for the real thing tomorrow when the Dolphins suit up for their 2019 season opener at Cleveland.
Quarterback Forrest Brock tossed touchdown passes to Justin Gilbert and Brandon Forrest and while he liked what he saw from the offense, Coach Tim Hyde was equally impressed with the results on the opposite side of the ball.
“Our starting defense played two series and gave up only one first down in each series via the pass,” Hyde said. “We didn’t force any turnovers, but we did have some batted balls and Sy [Riley] had three tackles for losses. We have some really good players developing into a solid defense. The best part [on offense] was the continued development of the line.”
El Camino Real plays in the same league as Cleveland, Taft and Granada Hills—the Dolphins’ first three oppponents.
“In the end it’s just a practice in which everyone had a chance to play and get ready for the season,” Hyde added. “Real coaching and fixes don’t come until after the first game when the score is finally kept. No major concerns other than we are going to play a lot of kids who’ve never played meaningful minutes in a varsity game.”
At a team gathering after the scrimmage, Riley and fellow seniors Xavier Whitfield, Tayari Gloster, Noah Ghodooshim and Max Palees were named captains after a team vote.
“Four or five others could’ve been chosen,” Hyde said. “A lot of senior leadership with this group.”
While the varsity scrimmaged on one half of the field the JV scrimmaged on the other. Barrett Gordon, Maurice Burgess and Chris Washington ran for scores, Amari Yolas caught a touchdown pass from Adam Sadigh and Marcus Brown had two interceptions.
