Information on Los Angeles County’s more than 367 miles of outdoor trails is now posted on a new website launched Thursday, Nov. 6.
Los Angeles County’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Internal Services and other agencies worked together to build the website, called trails.lacounty.gov.
“Many of the features that users will find at trails.lacounty.gov are inspired by frequently-asked questions that we receive from people looking to visit a trail in Los Angeles County,” said Norma E. Garcia, deputy director of the Parks Department’s Planning and Development Agency.
The website will be dedicated to providing information to outdoor enthusiasts, such as hikers, mountain cyclists, horseback riders and others, say county park and recreation officials.
Features of the website will include downloadable and printable QuickGuides that have trail maps, descriptions, photos and even elevation data.
Information on virtually every official trail within LA County’s borders will be on the website, including those located on State park and conservancy lands, such as paths in Will Rogers State Park or the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy land.
L.A. County is home to a diverse and expansive multi-use trail systems, and a growing number of people are using these trails in a variety of ways, said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich in a news release.
“Whether it is for hiking, biking, horseback riding, personal discovery or simply taking the family out for a walk in nature, trails in L.A. County have something for everyone,” Antonovich said, adding that trails.lacounty.gov is a comprehensive and “highly interactive website that will expose more people to these inimitable natural resources, deepen their knowledge about them and expand opportunities to enjoy healthy outdoor recreation.”
The project, which took years to complete, required the collaboration of county and state agencies to bring to fruition, said county parks officials in a news release. Partners in the construction of the website included the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, California State Parks, Mountains Restoration Trust, Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.
