Nathaniel John Myrick passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 13, at his home. He was born March 17, 1960, in Santa Monica and grew up in Pacific Palisades. He was the son of John F. Myrick and Mary E. Myrick. Nat graduated from Palisades Charter High School, class of 1978.
Nat loved nature, the ocean and the desert. He grew up near the bluffs and hiked down the trail to Will Rogers Beach with his sisters and father as a child. This was before Temescal Canyon Road was paved in and the family loved to hike along the creek in the beautiful tree lined canyon. He and his friends and other neighborhood kids spent many happy afternoons riding bicycles, skateboarding and hiking the bluffs, which were filled with wildflowers from the wild mustard and radish plants every spring.
Nat was an avid surfer, windsurfer and sailor. He became an accomplished sailboat crewman and crewed on a Columbia 43 in many races, including the annual Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race. He later moved to Ventura and enjoyed living near the beach with his partner, Martha. He chose to work nights at Ralph’s Grocery Store in Malibu so that he could surf in the mornings.
Nat spent many weekends in the desert when he was growing up, racing motorcycles with his father. Later on, Nat continued to ride motorcycles and was fond of getting together with friends to go dirt bike riding. Nat also loved camping and skiing and was an excellent skier.
Nat had many lifelong friends, also staying close to his friends from high school, enjoying their company over the years.
He retired several years ago after working 30 years, and was blessed to have had that time with his family and friends before his passing.
Nat is survived by his parents, Jack and Betty Myrick, his sisters, Ali, Leslie, Angie Myrick and sister and brother-in-law Hilary and Joe Torres, and his nephew George Soltwedel.
He also leaves behind his loving partner, Martha Silva and her daughter, Jennifer Goodman.
