Westside Youth Orchestra (WYO) will play the overture in Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera Company’s April 14 performance of Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” at Palisades Lutheran Church. Michael Arsone, Palisadian ninth-grade homeschooler, lover of all things Mozart and a youth orchestra’s pianist, is thrilled with the 3 p.m. gig.
“Our orchestra has performed with a soloist soprano before, but working with a whole opera company is amazing,” Arsone said. “The enthusiasm of Mozart’s music pulls me in. When we play the D major opening, I feel the excitement of a new romance.”
Arsone has pursued his interest in Mozart with a vengeance. “He started downloading scores from the public domain and brought them to his piano teachers,” said his mother Sarah Arsone, “so he really led the way.”
Though he is primarily focusing on piano with the WYO under the direction of Lowell Crystall, Arsone recently started studying flute in preparation for the Metropolitan Opera Company’s performance.
