Last Saturday, a group of 15 runners and hikers tackled the first of five legs of the Backbone Run, starting at Will Rogers State Historic Park, starting at 6:15 a.m. They will take on the second leg this Saturday morning, also starting at 6:15.
The Backbone Trail is 67 miles long and stretches from Will Rogers to Point Mugu. The first leg was approximately 12 miles.
Over five weeks, the group will complete the entire journey, passing through Malibu and Encinal Canyons and Yerba Buena before culminating at Point Mugu. The runners completed the first leg in two hours and 50 minutes, while the hikers finished in five hours. The total elevation climb for the route was 1,931 feet.
The group includes 11 Palisadians: Thomas Hathaway, Sheridan Hathaway, Dalena Hathaway, Paul Notaras, Rob Chamber, Romney Resney, Troy Elander, Brian Temple, Jonathan Weaver, Lynn Borland, Eleanor Keare and Rebecca Martin. The other four members are Marc Binenfeld (Westwood), Betty Morin (Brentwood), Susan Duenas (Thousand Oaks) and Phil Feder (Santa Monica).
