Women hold only 26 percent of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) jobs. With the booming STEM industry there is a need for more workers, and more women in the field. The all-girls STEM summer camp at Marymount High School, called Alexa Café, gives girls ages 10-15 the chance to help fill the gap.
At Alexa Café, girls develop a passion for technology and innovation while collaborating in a chic environment that emphasizes entrepreneurship, leadership, brand identity and philanthropy. Whether developing wearable electronics that light up your clothes, designing a webpage, producing a short movie, or learning to code creatively, Alexa Café believes technology shouldn’t be intimidating.
“Alexa Café is the greatest place on Earth for girls to learn code. You feel safe and happy, and there is a nice balance between fun and learning. I can’t wait to come back!” said camper Nadia Ansari.
“Alexa Café is amazing. At other camps I didn’t get as much attention or make friends. Alexa Café is a great place for all girls to go—even if you’re not into technology, you learn tremendously,” Astrid E. Johnson gushed.
And because the camp is for girls only, campers get a reprieve from some social pressures that can arise in a coed setting.
“Alexa Café provides an open, safe environment and community where girls can try new things and make new friends without the pressure that they feel when boys are around. I had an amazing experience at Alexa Café,” said Harper Green.
Summer camp visits are held twice a week and fill up quickly. For an appointment, contact Elise at 408-466-4792 or elise@iDTech.com.
