Dolphins Eliminated by Chatsworth 1-0 in Eight Innings

It was only the first round, but last Wednesday afternoon’s City Open Division playoff contest at George Robert Field had all the tension of a championship game. Palisades was hosting nine-time City champion Chatsworth, which had beaten the Dolphins two times early in the season.
This time, however, it was different. Starter Jake Moore pitched the game of his life, keeping the 10th-seeded Chancellors off the scoreboard for seven innings and recording five strikeouts.
The seventh-seeded Dolphins had several opportunities to score and even had a runner thrown out at the plate, but the game went to extra innings and Chatsworth got a run on an error to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth off reliever Kyle Grassl, who had one of Palisades’ five hits (the others were by Jake Herrera, Jabe Payne, Zach Gresham and Vincent Langdon).
The Dolphins got their leadoff man on in the bottom of the frame but couldn’t get him home. It was the first playoff game Palisades has lost on its home field since a 2-0 defeat to Kennedy in 2018.
Palisades and Chatsworth have met five times in the playoffs since 2008 when Mike Voelkel took over the program and the Chancellors have won all five—three in the first round, once in the quarterfinals and once in the semifinals.
