Dollies Making a Difference, which sews and ships cloth dolls to children around the world, will host its first fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, on the front lawn of 278 Toyopa Dr. The event will include a silent auction, handcrafted items for sale, children’s arts and crafts, and refreshments, including home-baked desserts. All proceeds will benefit the organization of Westside women who gather weekly to sew cloth dolls for children worldwide in need of something special, made just for them with compassion and love. Dollies Making a Difference originated as a response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Organized by Palisadian Cindy Simon and retired Canyon School kindergarten teacher Dorothy Miyake, the group sent more than 600 dolls through the disaster relief nonprofit AmeriCares to orphanages, schools and displaced persons camps in that country. Since then, it has expanded its reach to Ghana, Israel, El Salvador and many other countries, while also supplying shelters and hospitals in Southern California. The women have sewn and distributed more than 1,300 dolls. The organization is not a 501(c)(3), but uses all proceeds to purchase supplies, pay for shipping and make financial donations to the nonprofit groups that welcome their dolls.
