Palisades Democratic Club is slated to host documentary filmmaker Kim Snyder and screen her film “NEWTOWN” at Palisades Charter High School on Saturday, June 16.
Snyder spent three years documenting the aftermath of the tragedy, following three parents who lost their children in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 children and six school employees dead.
The film, which debuted in 2016, has received rave reviews from Variety Magazine and the New York Times.
“Aside from the mourning families, Snyder trains her camera on the well-meaning neighbors who never know how much to interfere; the school’s shattered custodian; the volunteer EMT who slowly realized the extent of the damage from the back of her ambulance,” one review said.
“It isn’t interested in rehashing the explicit details of what happened, or reinvestigating anything [the shooter is never referred to by name, and considered only briefly],” another said.
The Sandy Hook story continues even today, as parents have filed lawsuits against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, claiming he has spread a false narrative accusing them of making up the entire tragedy.
At Pali High, it will not be the first time gun violence is addressed. Students have walked out of class on numerous occasions in the past few months in demand of gun law reform. Some have started petitions to fight gun violence and increase security. New fencing and push bar gates have made their way into the Palisadian campus in hopes of not joining the tragic trend.
The Democratic club will be donating some of the proceeds from the screening to Snyder’s latest documentary project focused on the Parkland, Florida, students.
