Dear Vany,
What is a good response to give when kids make rude comments to me about having braces?

Dear Anonymous,
I used to have braces and I totally understand what you’re going through. My first tip is to ignore them, someone who treats other people that way is not worth your time anyway.
But, if you want a comeback, here are some responses. If they tell you your braces look weird, say, “Well at least my mom cares about my teeth.”
If someone says anything bad about you in any way, just start looking around. When they ask what you’re doing, say, “I’m just looking for where I asked.”
If someone says that you’re ugly now that you have braces, say, “Huh, that would be funny if it were true.” Then look them up and down and walk away.
In the long run, it doesn’t matter what they say, you’re going to have a beautiful smile.
Hope this helps!

Dear Vany,
Why does my mom keep saying “When I was your age … ”?

Dear Anonymous,
I think your mom says this because she wants to connect with you more! Maybe she thinks if she talks to you about things from her time, you will have more in common.
Maybe you could try hanging out with her more, and then she may think you don’t need that other connection. Just spend one day a week going out with her to dinner, activities or a movie. It may surprise you how fun it could be.
If you don’t have that kind of time, just reply to her and quickly change the topic. This will get you talking about something else and may fix your problem.
Thanks for writing!
