Dear Vany,
I admit it—I’m a picky eater and it can be so embarrassing when I’m over at a friend’s house for dinner because I don’t want to eat what’s being served. What’s a polite way to get out of eating stuff?

Dear Picky,
I have the exact same problem! I’ve been a picky eater my entire life so I understand where you are coming from. Most of my friends’ moms know my eating habits by now and will make me what I desire to eat (it’s never too hard to make). But, because it is a new school year and you’re probably making new friends, here are some tips.
You can bring your own snack and when you get offered something else you can say: no thank you, I have my own snack, but thanks so much for offering! Or you could have your mom talk to your friend’s mom or your friend, and have her tell them that you may not love everything she gives you. This works best for big meals like dinner.
I really do hope everything works out and remember, parents just want you to be happy.
Thank you so much for writing!

Dear Vany,
I want to start a collection! Do you have any advice on how to get started?
—Ready to collect!
Dear Ready to Collect,
I have a small collection of seashells actually, so I have some helpful tips.
First of all, make sure you know and love what you’re collecting. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you’ll get bored doing it and just stop. Second, GET WHAT YOU’RE COLLECTING ANY TIME YOU CAN!
Whether you’re at gift shops, a school book fair, or even CVS for goodness sake, do your best to find your item. You always have to have it in the back of your mind. Now this was hard for me, because you can only really get seashells at the beach, but if I ever saw them in any other place, especially airports had a lot (because they think all anyone cares about over here in California is the beach), I’d get them.
That brings up another thing: AIRPORTS. They are the BEST place to get your item. They have things from all around the world, so it will never be hard to find your item. I hope your collection ends up being HUGE!!
Thank you so much for writing!
