Former Palisadian Nicole Kidman can be seen in “The Northman,” a historic epic from director Robert Eggers.
The film centers on Amleth—played by Alexander Skarsgård—a Viking prince in 10th century Iceland. The film was co-written by Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón.
“Having witnessed his father’s killing as a young boy, Amleth goes on a mission to kill the men responsible,” according to The Independent.
Kidman will be taking on the role of Queen Gudrún, Amleth’s mother, joined by Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, Willem Dafoe, Claes Bang, Kate Dickie and more.
Filming took place in Ireland between August and December 2020, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film marks the second time Kidman and Skarsgård work together; they previously played married couple Celeste and Perry Wright in HBO’s “Big Little Lies.”
Skarsgård recently spoke with IndieWire about working with Eggers and fulfilling his dream of telling a Viking story.
“He absolutely is [a perfectionist]. But he’s also a genius,” Skarsgård said in an interview with IndieWire. “‘The Northman’ was the first time I worked on something that was so meticulously stylized, and you almost had to see it as a dance between the camera and the actors, because the camera was constantly moving, and so were we. If the timing was slightly off, then we’d have to go again. I’ve never been more tired than after those six months.
“You’re so exhausted that you want to cry. You feel like you finally got all the choreography of the fight worked out, but then you have to go again and again and again. There’s always something in the background that wasn’t quite right. The flip side of that is when you finally get it, it feels like winning gold at the Olympics.”
The film is slated to be theatrically released in the United States on April 22 by Focus Features, and internationally by Universal Pictures.
