Heaven has a new angel. Our mother, grammy, aunt, mother-in-law, sister and friend Carol Silverspare Kapan has passed on with dignity to the Lord.
Born in Santa Monica, California, September 23, 1931, Carol had the most interesting and wonderful life, as she said. From her mid-teens until she was in her mid-30s, Carol worked in print, radio, runway and television modeling. She was blessed to be loved by the camera as much as she loved it. She traveled throughout South America, Cuba, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the United States modeling Rosemary Reid Swimsuits. She was a model on Queen for a day radio/television show for a little over 11 years until she had her second child, Christopher.
She was married first to Kay Anders and then to Arnold J. Kapan for over 50 years and was a mom/stepmom to six children: Arnie Jr., Eric, Michelle, Kipp, Chris and Claudette. She lived most of her life in Pacific Palisades, then moved down to Rancho Santa Fe for almost 30 years, finally settling the last year in her “dream home” in Encinitas, looking at the ocean every day and watching sunsets and looking for whales.
She worked with several charities of her choice: the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles (for the hearing impaired), Sonance Group in Los Angeles (supporting the Howard House Institute for the hearing impaired) and finally Las Duanas in Rancho Santa Fe (helping to find homes for homeless children). She presided over the John Tracy, ran tennis tournaments and of course, throughout them all, was a model for fundraising fashion shows.
To all of us, she was simply “mom.”
Throughout her life, she graced everyone she met with a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face. She was a “second mom” to so many of her children’s friends, she traveled with Arnie to wonderful places in life, and her favorites were La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Mammoth Mountain for skiing and always always, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, which was hers and Arnie’s special spot.
Carol left this world as she entered it, with a smile, dignity, a big heart and love.
Services for Carol will be on Friday, January 14, at 1:00 p.m. at the Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe, located at 6225 Paseo Delicias Road, with a reception following.
She is survived by her children, Kipp and his wife Liz, Chris and his wife Tamara and their children Nicole and Shane, Claudette and her husband Alan and their daughters Chloe and Lauren, her stepsons Arnie Junior and Eric, and her brother Dave Silverspare and his wife Myra, and their children.
She will be truly missed by all that knew her.
