“I will use less water in my water gun.”
“I am going to wash my hair and my dog’s hair at the same time.”
“I will only take two baths every week.”
These are just some of the ways Canyon Charter Elementary School Kindergarten students are working to save water, as demonstrated by their “22 Tips to Save Water” video created by the 22 students in Susan Hamilburg’s class.
Each of the students is featured in the video, giving tips on how to help beat the drought.
The video was the culmination of a two-months-long project that began when Governor Brown announced the need to cut water usage in California by 25 percent.
“This video expresses the thoughtful and often surprising recommendations that could only come from 5 year olds,” Hamilburg said. “The message is we all, even kids, can do our part in our daily lives to help save water.”
The kindergarten students in Room K-1 at Canyon read books and researched how much water they use in their daily lives, such as how much water is used for taking baths and brushing teeth.
For homework, the students wrote, illustrated and shared their own ways to save water. These ideas were compiled in a book before the making of the water-wise two-minute video.
“Ever since Penelope has been involved in this project, I’ve been much more conscious of how much water I waste. She is always letting me know!” one class parent said.
The project taught students about the sources of and need for water and the results of drought.
As the kindergartners in Room K-1 say, “Please save our water!”
