Former UCLA men’s basketball head coach and current Mississippi State head coach Ben Howland will hold his 11th annual Youth Basketball Camp next Monday through Friday at Palisades High.
Directing the camp will be former Pali High boys coach James Paleno. Among those assisting him will be former Dolphins players Edward Estavan, Louis Kurihara and Brian Barner and current Pali High girls coaches Torino Johnson and Dominique Scott.
Open to boys and girls ages 6-12, the camp will focus on defense, rebounding, dribbling, passing, shooting and offensive moves. There will be 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 games, a hot shot (3-point) contest and free throw shooting every day.
After two years off, Howland was hired by Mississippi State in March of 2015 and led the Bulldogs to a 14-17 record (7-11 in the SEC) in his first season.
In 10 seasons at UCLA, Howland guided the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament seven times, including three straight Final Four trips (2006-2008) and four conference regular-season titles (2006-08, 2013). Howland compiled a 233-107 record (a .685 winning percentage) with the Bruins and has compiled a 401-206 overall collegiate record in his 19 seasons (five at Northern Arizona, four at Pittsburgh and 10 at UCLA).
An awards ceremony will be held next Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Pali High gym. Parents, family and friends are welcome to attend.
