Palisadian Debbie Alexander’s new work records the journey she and her beloved slippers have enjoyed since she bought them seven years ago. She joins other artists in a group exhibit of the Creative Photography Workshops, ‘Multiple Visions’ through April 21 at the Edward Cella Art + Architecture Gallery, 6018 Wilshire Blvd. An artists’ reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 14 at the gallery. ’Anyone and everyone who knows me realizes that I am madly in love with my pink fuzzy Ugg slippers,’ Alexander says. ‘No doubt, I have put millions of miles on them since I purchased them in 2005.’ Alexander is faced with the stark reality of retiring them. New holes have cropped up in the soles and the pink fuzz is stained beyond belief. Inspired by John Baldessari, Alexander is taking her slippers on a photographic journey before sending them away for a precious metal coating. ’I began last year by sneaking my slippers into the ‘Fashioning Fashion’ costume exhibit at LACMA,’ she says. ’In February, I visited Hollywood intending to shoot my slippers at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. I envisioned them resting on the famous celebrity footprints. ’Next, I experimented with a prior idea for my slippers of using my neighbor’s agave plant blossoms as legs.” The slippers’ final stop thus far had to be the Mecca of high fashion, The Rodeo Collection on Rodeo Drive. ‘Not only do I feel this project has been a journey of self-exploration, more importantly, it has given my work much-needed focus. My ultimate goal, though, is just to put a smile on the faces of those viewing my photographs.’ Artists included are Alexander, Marcia Ziffren, David Meltzer, Jan Woods, Maria Kolligian, Linda Wolf, Nina Kotick, Jill Stein, Bob Harper, Bonnie Podolsky, Debora Guetta, Joyce Ostin, Matthew Finley, Andy Marx and Robin Cowles. Tracey Landworth curates the exhibit. Contacts: (310) 839-8866 or e-mail info@creativephotoworkshops.com.
