William Schallert—best known for playing the father on “The Patty Duke Show”—died in his Pacific Palisades home on Sunday, May 8. The actor was 93.
Throughout his decades-long Hollywood career, Schallert held secondary roles on many popular shows. His resume included appearances on “The Many Loves of Dobbie Gillis,” “Star Trek,” “The Twilight Zone” and “Desperate Housewives.”
His career extended beyond the sitcom realm, and he held numerous small roles in many films as well. Schallert was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1979 to 1981 and witnessed the longest, and one of the most historic, actors’ strike in 1980. He received the Ralph Morgan Award in 1993 for his service to SAG.
