Representatives from Gelson’s Markets visited Palisades Charter Elementary School to celebrate their new high durability salad bar last month. Gelson’s Markets, Pali Elementary and the United Fresh Produce Association (UFPA) are working together to expand the healthy eating opportunities available to students.
“As a part of Gelson’s commitment to fresh and healthy produce, we’re thrilled to help provide our neighborhood elementary school with a new salad bar,” said Mark Carroll of Gelson’s. “We’re happy we can contribute to the community’s opportunity for healthy eating and to embrace healthy lifestyles at an early age.”
Gelson’s selected Pali Elementary to be the recipient of their first salad bar donation because of the community ties between the school and the local Gelson’s Market.
“It’s best to start a healthy diet at a young age and now the students have the choice to eat something healthy,” said Carroll.
A parent volunteer from Pali Elementary, Susie Cohen, coordinated the donation. Gelson’s is working with a UFPA initiative to provide 300 California schools with salad bars this year.
Designed specifically for elementary students, the salad bar’s low height makes it easier for students to help themselves to the fresh selections of the day and lockable wheels allow the bar to be moved in and out of the cafeteria on the days that the salad bar is served.
“We always like to work with our communities and help them embrace healthy lifestyles, especially at a young age,” said Will Gresham of Gelson’s. “The elementary school is the perfect place to encourage healthy eating for young people and the salad bar is the perfect representation of that.”
