The Will Rogers Junior Lifeguard program participated in the “Super Bowl” of all summer competitions last week – the Taplin Relays. Local lifeguards-in-training competed against other Southland beaches, each team consisting of six runners, six paddlers and six swimmers.
In the C Division (ages 9-11), Will Rogers’ A team was third, its B team was 11th and its C team was 22nd out of 24 teams. In the B Division (ages 12-13), Will Rogers’ A team was 11th and its B team was 20th. In the A Girls Division (ages 14-15), Will Rogers finished 11th out of 13 teams and in the A Division, Will Rogers’ A team was fourth and its B team was 15th in a field of 16.
The A Division boys included Luke Culebro, Mark Martinez, Spencer Davis, Sammy Speiser, Kenny Saab, Brandon Epp, Alex Brown, Will Schwertdfegger, Marcus Lehrer, Evan Blaney, Zach Senator, Mitchell Kim, Jeremy Stark and Ian Labash and the girls included Camille Oswald, Gretta Johnson, Clara Saab, Elena Saab, Kayla Quintero and Jocelyn Krisilas.
There was also a Junior Night Taplin Relay for the A and AA (ages 16-17) levels Saturday in Hermosa Beach. Will Rogers’ Boys A team of Senator (swim), David Grinsfelder (paddle) and Labash (run) took third place. Its other Boys A team consisted of paddler Speiser, swimmer Blaney and runner Epp. The Girls A threesome was Elena Saab (swim), Clara Saab (paddle) and Quintero (run).
