They may only be freshmen, but Palisadians Cate Rozelle and Malia Verge are already making history at Marymount High.
Rozelle clocked 22:24 to finish in fifth place and Verge clocked 22:36 to finish sixth and help the Sailors’ frosh/soph cross country team win the White Division on Saturday at the Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational in Griffith Park.
Marymount’s four fastest runners all placed in the top 10, its fifth runner was 14th and the sixth runner tied for 39th. The Sailors won with a low score of 36 points — 12 fewer than Bravo Medical Magnet.
As an eighth-grader last year at Corpus Christi School, Rozelle was a starting outside hitter on the Wildcats’ volleyball team that reached the Elite 8 of the Catholic Youth Organization Championships and also started on the girls basketball team.
Verge, who lives in the Highlands, was the point guard and captain of the basketball team at Calvary Christian School, where she also played soccer and ran cross country.
Meanwhile, Loyola dominated the boys competition, taking first place in the seeded race with the help of sophomore Charlie Sherman (15:20), who attended Canyon School and was a youth soccer All-Star and one of the top juniors at the Palisades Tennis Center.
