Orange County Great Park in Irvine was the site for the Girls’ Sweepstakes Race in last Saturday night’s Woodbridge Classic, where Palisades High‘s Marissa Williams ran head-to-head against Great Oak junior Destiny Collins for the first time since the CIF state track and field finals in June.
The two ran in different divisions Sept. 5 at the Seaside Invitational, where Williams clocked a personal-best 15:59 to win the senior division and Collins ran 15:58 to win the junior division. This time, Collins opened a huge lead in the first mile of the three-mile course and was never challenged, winning in 16:04. Williams wound up fourth in 16:27. Not to be overlooked was Pali High senior Natalie Marsh, who clocked a personal-best 18:10.
“I got boxed in and had a really bad start,” Williams said.
Five Dolphins had personal bests in the Varsity Boys Gold Division. Shane Brouwer was 11th in 15:31 and the team was sixth.
“They put us put us in a good category so we were competitive and had the second-fastest City time,” Coach Bob Macias said.
Jakob Pollack (15:43), Ben Hamer (16:09), Jack Hockley (16:41), Andres Gomez (16:49), Connor Smith (16:52) and William Taylor (18:39)
Next up for the Dolphins is the Bell-Jeff XC Invitational, an age group race Saturday morning in Griffith Park.
