Pacific Palisades resident Larry Newman recently learned that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has nominated his program “Orchestra Kids 2012” for an Emmy in the Children/Youth category.
A three-time Emmy winner, Newman has been nominated five times in six years. Winners will be announced at the awards show on August 3 at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood.
The program, directed by Children’s Music Workshop founder Newman and co-produced by his son Tyler, showcases the annual concert broadcast, featuring a 140-piece orchestra from Schoenberg Hall at UCLA.
The group is comprised of the best instrumental music students from 30 Los Angeles-area elementary school music programs.
For the 2009 and 2010 shows, Newman produced with former student Eric Jasper, who played trumpet as a third grader at Marquez Elementary. Now writing scores for movies, Jasper still provides original music for the “Orchestra Kids” shows.
“Tyler played with the orchestra from the time he was in preschool,” his father said. “He was a violinist in the group for seven years and finally outgrew that role, so he started helping me on the production side.”
Since then, Tyler has started his own video production company, Pali Pictures, and many young Palisadians might know him as their camp counselor at St. Matthew’s.
Palisadians participating in the 2013 Emmy-nominated show are: Maddy Attar (Calvary Christian); Jack Berglas, Gidon Cohen, Samantha Kissane, Joseph Klein, Shelby McLain and Spencer Zaid (Marquez Elementary); Charlotte Costain, Jessica Garff, Gregory Gold, Augusta Haynes, Emerson Hurd, Akseli Kangaslahti, Sara Kangaslahti, Gus King, Shiva Ramaswami and Greta Zumbrunnen (Palisades Elementary); Peter Ling (St. Matthew’s); C.C. Silvestre (Topanga Elementary); Skyler Chang, Atticus Chang, Lourdes Letelier, Julianne Schwerdtfeger (UCLA Lab);and Jeremy Wells (Willows).
