On Sunday night, young patrons of Veggie Grill in Santa Monica were entertained by “America’s Got Talent” pyschic magician Paul “The Fantastic Fig” Fegen, who was invited by Palisades High sophomore Dane Elkins and his family as part of a fundraising party to generate money for Elkins’ travel expenses to Cali, Colombia for the World Junior Racquetball Championships in October.
“The Fantastic Fig” is the alter-ego of Fegen, a renowned Personal Injury attorney who earned his undergaduate degree at UCLA before attending USC Law School. Still a clown at heart, Fegen captivated a gathering of curious kids with his deck of “magic” cards.
Veggie Grill donated 50 percent of each order to Elkins if customers mentioned “Dane Elkins U.S. team” before ordering. Elkins qualified for the World Championships by taking fourth place in singles and winning gold medals in boys doubles and mixed doubles (with fellow Pali High player Atossa Rejaei) at this yera’s Wilson National Junior Olympic Racquetball Championships in Denver, Colorado.
Elkins, a straight A student, created a web page (www.gofundme.com/awz8ls) to raise money for his airfare, housing, food and uniforms.
