The Dillon Henry Foundation is hosting a mini soccer tournament Sunday at Palisades High to mark what would have been the 25th birthday of Dillon Henry, who died in a car accident in the summer of 2007 before his senior year at Pali High.
His family has honored Dillon in many ways through the Foundation that bears his name and chooses to commemorate his birthday in special ways.
The idea for this year’s birthday came from Dillon’s good friends David Lau, Gabe Lister and Elliot Wainman, who envisioned a soccer format with eight teams, short games and great memories with friends. Dillon loved soccer and played in AYSO, at Pali High and in club soccer.
The family and friends of Dillon Henry encourage the community to show its support by attending Sunday’s tournament or visiting dillonslist.org.
In June 2008 (Dillon’s graduating class), the Dillon Henry Foundation gave 10 scholarships to deserving seniors for all four years of college. These studentsremain in communication with the Foundation and nine of the 10 have graduated from four-year colleges and universities.
Each year the Foundation has continued to award scholarships, both for seniors at Pali High and renewals to those continuing their educations at many diverse schools. There are now over 70 Dillon Henry Scholarship recipients able to follow their educational pursuits. They meet annually at Dillon’s home for a barbecue to see old classmates and teachers, always with the support of Helen Kunkel from the Pali High college center.
The Foundation has encouraged these young adults to strive to create change and provide help to those in need. “Pay it forward” they are asked, and remember this young man, Dillon Henry, who touched the lives of so many.
